How we emerged

From a single licence in 2004 to a national mortgage bank.

AG Mortgage Bank Plc was incorporated on 21st July, 2004 to carry on business as a Primary Mortgage Institution (PMI). It was granted a mortgage banking licence by the Central Bank of Nigeria in December, 2004 and commenced full operations by 31st January, 2005.

The company has since inception developed innovative products that have received the approval of the Central Bank of Nigeria. In addition, the company has been approved by the Central Bank of Nigeria and accredited by the Federal Mortgage Bank as a window through which customers can access the National Housing Fund.

However, during this period, there have been developments in the operating environment, which created new opportunities and challenges to the institution. There is therefore the need to broaden the focus of the company's operations in order to consolidate its standing in the mortgage finance industry.

Common questions

What people ask us.

Yes, by the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation up to ₦500,000 per depositor per institution, in line with the NDIC Act 2023. The bank participates in the premium-assessed deposit insurance scheme.
No. AGMB is a private company limited by shares. Audited financial statements are filed with the Corporate Affairs Commission and the Central Bank of Nigeria, and published on request to depositors and borrowers.
Primary prudential supervision is by the Central Bank of Nigeria's Other Financial Institutions Supervision Department. Deposit insurance and resolution sit with NDIC. AML/CFT oversight runs through the Special Control Unit Against Money Laundering of the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment.
Commercial banks fund mortgages off short-tenor deposits, which is why their rates reprice frequently and why their NHF participation is small. A PMB is funded for the term — through the Mortgage Refinance Company of Nigeria and through NHF allocations — which is why we can write 30-year fixed at 6.0% and a commercial bank cannot.
Mortgage contracts transfer with the loan book on resolution. The original rate and tenor are preserved. This is established CBN resolution practice and is a contractual protection in your offer letter.
